National Conference adopts "Naya Kashmir" as its political and economic manifesto in its Historic Sopre session. The session was presided over by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. It had Indian leaders of the stature of Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Mrs. Indira Gandhi and Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan as guest participants. The president of Indian National Congress, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad was at Gulmarg, convalescing from poor health because of long incarceration. He also sent a special message for the session.

The Naya Kashmir was later hailed as the most progressive and visionary document of its time. It for the first time had special package for women, children and other backward sections.
