PM announces Rs 125 crore for reconstruction of Leh
LEH, AUGUST 17:- The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh during his visit to Leh today, announced to grant Rs. 125 crore, out of Prime Minister National Relief Fund, for reconstruction of Leh which has suffered severe damages due to flash floods triggered by recent cloudburst. The Prime Minister also announced Rs. 1.00 lac ex-gratia in favour of next of the kin of those who died in the natural calamity and Rs. 50,000 to these injured.

Speaking to the flood victims and the media persons at Relief Camp at Himank Complex, Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the purpose of his visit to Leh was to share his pain with the people of Ladakh at this critical point of time, in which, so many precious lives have lost rendering many children orphans. Dr. Singh assured that rehabilitation of the affected people, whose houses were completely damaged, would be undertaken with the collective efforts of the Central and State Governments and the Leh Hill Council before the onset of winter. Besides, restoration of hospitals, CT Scan units, drinking water supplies, electricity and road connectivity would be carried out effectively under Un-tied Funds, the Prime Minister added.

Dr. Singh said that all the restoration and rehabilitation works would be carried out under the supervision of a Monitoring Committee headed by the Chief Secretary of the State. The Prime Minister assured that there would be no constraint of money for reconstruction of Leh.

Later, the Prime Minister took a high level review meeting about losses, relief and rehabilitation measures which was attended by the Governor Mr. NN Vohra, Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Mr. Gh. Nabi Azad, Union Renewable Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Dy. Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand, Tourism Minister, Nawang Rigzin Jora, Chief Executive Councilor, Leh Hill Council, Mr. Cheering Dorjay, CA&PD Minister, Mr. Qamar Ali Akhon, Member of Parliament Mr. Hassan Khan, Member of Parliament, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz, Principal Secretary to PM, Mr. T K A Nayar, IGP Security, Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Mr. Tsering Angchok and SSP, Leh Mr. BS Tuti.

The Commissioner Secretary, Planning and Ladakh Affairs, Mr. BB Vyas gave presentation to the Prime Minister about the damages caused by the cloudburst and the future strategies about relief, rescue and rehabilitation measures.

The Deputy Commissioner, Leh Mr. Tsering Angchuk presented a DVD to the Prime Minister which carries the details about the flash flood in Leh district.

Earlier, the Prime Minister visited most suffered area of Zanak-Maney at Choglamsar and took firsthand appraisal of the quantum of cloudburst damage.

Dr. Singh gave patient hearing to the people’s demands and problems at the Relief Camp at Himank Complex and enquired about the supply of relief materials and availability of ration. The heads and representatives of different religious, social and political organizations also called on the Prime Minister at Relief Camp, Himank and submitted memorandums urging generous Central assistance for reconstruction of Leh district.

The Governor, J&K State, Mr. N. N Vohra, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Union Health Minister, Mr. Gh. Nabi Azad, the Chief Minister, Mr. Omer Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand, Minister for Tourism, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh, Mr. Chering Dorjay, Member Parliament, Mr. Saif Uddin Soz and team of high level Central and State officers accompanied the Prime Minister during his visit to Leh.
