Delegation of Amnesty International called on Chief Minister

Srinagar, May 22- “Allowing Amnesty International team to visit Kashmir is clear indication of the fact that Government believes in openness and transparency” said Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah while interacting with a delegation of Amnesty International, who called on him today at Srinagar.  He further said that government is firm on its commitment to protect human rights of the people.

The delegation comprising of Mr. Ramesh Gopala Krishnan and Mr. Bikramjit Batra informed the Chief Minister about the activities of Amnesty International and about their current visit to the valley.

The Chief Minister said that government always encourages objectives and fair analysis by all the concerned bodies and organizations so that on the basis of their positive suggestions corrective measures could be taken whenever and wherever required. He said that last two decades have seen turbulent situation with abnormal turmoil all round the valley.  During this turmoil innocent civilians suffered on one side or the other as a result of the unwanted gun culture.  However, Mr. Omar Abdullah said wherever any security personnel has been found guilty of any human rights violation, government has never found lacking will to punish the guilty and state government in full cooperation with Central government has practically proved the fact that any security personnel found guilty has been brought to the book.

Mr. Omar Abdullah said that we realize that government has wider responsibilities towards people, therefore the commitment for protection of human right in much stronger and unwaivery. He said that recently a new culture of stone pelting has emerged in the valley but with the cooperation of general public and mohalla committees the youngsters have been persuaded to desist from resorting to much unacceptable activity, which have mostly harmed general public.

The Chief Minister said that whether it is a case of militancy or general law and order situation, the government is adopting full legal and judicial route to deal with the accused persons.  He said that there is no desire of the government to thwart any legal process or deny any person his legal right.  All government actions are doctorined by proper legal procedures and judicial system..

While giving instances of issuing passports to genuine citizens, Mr. Omar Abullah said, that he has directed Police Intelligence Department to issue NOC’s to kiths and kins of  even militants, in case they are not involved in any militant activities.  He gave several examples in which such NOC’s have been issued.
